Work Permit To work in Kenya you will need a work permit. Expats are often employed on a two year permit, this is the longest period the government will allow, and they cost KSH 200,000 (about £1800). The company should pay. You will probably apply for your work permit along time before you go to the country but it often is held up for a while. Don't expect it to be waiting at the airport! There is no problem entering the country without a permit, at the airport you can buy a tourist Visa for $25 US. This will last for 3 months and can be renewed after the period is over with a visit to immigration who will allow you to stay for another 3 months for KSH 200 (under £2). NSSF Card You will need to acquire a NSSF card before you start working (I imagine this is only if you are getting paid in KSH and into a Kenyan bank account). I think this is similar to a national insurance card. If you ask a Taxi driver to take you to the NSSF building they should no where it is. It is in the centre of Nairobi. When you get to the building (it has NSSF written on the from in big letters) go through the main doors and turn left. You will go into a room which is quite dirty and has lots of black ink around a sink in the corner. There will be a number of different Kenyans sitting at the desk. They will all speak English. You need to show your passport and work contract and they will fill in some forms, take your finger prints and eventually issue you a card. Women get a booklet and men get a laminated card. Personal Identification Number (PIN) You will need to get a PIN as well. I had to go to immigration to a place called Times Towers to register my passport (I did not have my work permit at this point) then I login to a website and register my details and print off my proof of PIN page. They will give you the website on a card at immigration. I do know people who obtained the certificate at immigration and did not have to complete the online bit but they were here before us. |
