RELOCATING TO KENYA - ENTERTAINMENT

There is a wealth of different things to do to entertain yourself in Nairobi. If you are going to live in other towns then I do not know exactly what they have but I think there is less Western style entertainment. However, if you go to the coast then there is a many similar and different things to do. If you want to find out about safaris and trips to the coast look in the relevant sections above. In this section I will deal with entertainment in Nairobi.

Eating out
Eating out is a little cheaper than the UK. There is lots of great restaurants in Nairobi in many different Areas. Westlands has lots of places to eat as does Karen. There are also a number of different establishments in the City Centre.
Along Langata road, near the National Park, is the famous Carnivore complex. There is a couple of different restaurants here, as you can imagine, based around meat. You used to be able to eat all different types of game here impala, zebra, giraffe etc. However due to very strict hunting laws, you can now only get pork, beef, lamb, chicken, ostrich, crocodile (I think) and, the national meat of Kenya, goat.
If you want a very cheap meal then there are lots of small establishments which serve Nyama Choma, roast meat normally in the form of goat. Many of these are a great place to get a cheap barbequed meal. Here food is very cheap and the beer is cheaper as well. Beer in a restaurant will cost about KSH160 in a local bar it will be between KSH80 and KSH100.

Clubs
Obviously there are a number of clubs in the city Centre but make sure you watch your wallet! There are a number of different clubs around the Westlands area which I know about and probably many more all over Nairobi.

Cinemas
There are lots of cinemas all over Nairobi which show some very up to date films. However there is also lots of people wanting to sell you a DVD of the latest release film as well at the sides of lots of roads. The quality of these varies hugely.
Going to the cinema is reasonably priced and confectionary is much cheaper than in the UK.
The cinemas I know of are at Junction, Village Market, Westgate. However, there is many over Nairobi.

Football and Sport
There is a Kenyan premier league with teams playing at local grounds, they are quite fun to go to but go with someone you know the first couple of times. If the game is going to be on DSTV, then they sometimes play at bigger stadiums. You sometimes get National games as well the most recent being against Nigeria.
Rugby is becoming a big sport in Kenya and there is a rugby 7s tournament held in Nairobi with play of a high standard.
If you want to watch UK premier league games and international rugby and you don't want to subscribe to the full package DSTV then lots of bars will show sport. Premier league football is huge in Kenya.

TV
There are a few local channels which you get for free. The local TV is in a mixture of Kiswahili and English and shows a combination of African made programs and programs from the USA.
If you want a bit more then you can subscribe to satellite television in the form of DSTV. You can get the basic package for as little as KSH800 a month. However if you want the full sports and movies then you have to pay KSH5400. Quite a considerable difference. I subscribe to the middle package for KSH1800 in which I get two (ok) sports channels and 2 (just OK) movie channels as well as a number of other channels news, lifestyle.
Check out their website for full details.
